5th Maxence Larrieu International Flute Competition-Nice 2024

“Artistic excellence, creativity and ethics” have been the hallmarks of the Maxence Larrieu – Nice International Flute Competition since it was founded in 2007 by the association À Travers La Flûte.

The 5th edition will take place online from 12 to 14 July and at the Conservatoire of Nice from 21 to 26 October, 2024.

For 16 years, this competition has established itself as a springboard for the careers of young flutists from around the world. It brings together a jury composed of internationally renowned flutists, under the presidency of Maxence Larrieu.

The competition benefits from the generosity and active support of major partner institutions and companies, and looks forward to the arrival, in 2024, of individual patrons who are highly committed to promoting the flute in France and around the world.

INNOVATIONS

For this fifth edition, several innovations are on the horizon :

The first innovation, called the ” Artistic Program “, offers candidates the opportunity to showcase their creativity and artistic dimension during the semi-finals. They must design an eclectic and original program, blending different styles, aesthetics, and musical periods. The most creative and original project will be rewarded with a special prize awarded by a jury specifically formed for this purpose.

The second novelty draws inspiration from the rich French tradition of the flute by dedicating the second round to French music. The French flute school has played a major role in the history of this instrument, thanks to composers such as Debussy, Poulenc, Jolivet, Ibert, and instrument makers like Louis Lot and Couesnon, as well as renowned flutists like Marcel Moyse, Jean-Pierre Rampal and Maxence Larrieu. In tribute to this tradition, the best performer of the French music program will receive a special prize in collaboration with teachers from conservatories and music schools throughout France.

Lastly, the Young Talent Prize will be awarded by a jury composed of young musicians and flutists aged 12 to 25. These national and international awards will allow a wide audience, including students and professionals, to participate in this exceptional event, both online and in person, to celebrate the flute and music in general.

Furthermore, to enrich the repertoire and promote contemporary composition for the flute, the competition regularly commissions works from exceptional composers. For the 2024 edition, Guillaume Connesson will compose a solo flute piece for the first round, and Élise Bertrand will compose a piece for flute and piano for the second round. These works will be published by Éditions Billaudot.

LARRIEU COMPETITION FESTIVAL

During the event in Nice, from 24 to 26 October, 2024, the Larrieu Competition will organize, in partnership with the associations La Traversière and Jean-Pierre Rampal, a flute festival featuring concerts, masterclass, lectures, workshops and exhibitions of flutes and scores.

CELEBRATING MAXENCE LARRIEU’S 90’S BIRTHDAY

October 25th will be dedicated to celebrating the 90th birthday of the eminent flutist after whom the competition is named, Maxence Larrieu. À Travers La Flûte Association will organize concerts, lectures and a Gala Concert, bringing together his close associates, former students and jury members around their honorary president.

The Competition Final will take place on October 26, with the future laureates accompanied by the Nice Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Lionel Bringuier for Jacques Ibert’s Concerto, and by a string trio composed of soloists from the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra for Mozart’s quartets.

In this fifth edition, the Maxence Larrieu-Nice International Competition continues its mission to highlight the artists of tomorrow while promoting its values. The competition’s organizing committee, composed of musicians, the Nice Conservatory under the direction of Thierry Muller, himself a flutist, jury members, accompanying musicians, patrons and sponsors will come together to welcome young talents, while supporting the principles of artistic excellence, creativity, and ethics.

Join us online from July 12 to 14 and October 21 to 26, 2024 at the Conservatory of Nice.
